Sr Mary Threadgold, founder of Sonas apc and the Sonas programme has retired from the board of Sonas apc. Some of Sr Mary’s colleagues, fellow professionals and friends pay tribute to her and the legacy she has created in her chosen fields.
“A gentle, unassuming woman, Sr Mary Threadgold has for 26 years been a visionary and innovator. While she will be missed in her retirement, her legacy will live on through the hundreds of healthcare professionals she has trained, the weekly Sonas sessions in nursing homes and hospitals throughout Ireland and the UK, the resources that she developed to support the spiritual needs and well being of older people, and Sonas apc’s work. Always true to her vocation, the depth of her contribution is evidenced by the
changed nature of care practices and attitudes towards vulnerable older people who are housebound or in care.
Sr Mary has had a profound influence on my life, as she has had for others. I was a journalist when I first met her and I was immediately drawn to the story of transformation at the heart of the Sonas programme. Witnessing it firsthand was inspirational.
Over the years, as I have learnt from Sr Mary and worked alongside her, I have developed an unwavering commitment to making that transformation happen, whatever the project, programme or context.
While she has stepped back from Sonas apc, Sr Mary will continue to be actively involved in the area of spirituality of the older person.
I wish Sr Mary well in her retirement and look forward to the next phase in the life of my friend and mentor” – Sinead Grennan, CEO, Sonas apc.
