    Dementia Friendly Garden winners  launch their new garden 

    St Clare’s Nursing Home Glasnevin, the winner of our dementia friendly garden competition, recently held the launch of their brand new dementia friendly garden. The day was celebrated by residents, families and staff.

    Dementia – Friendly Garden Project 2015
    Project Aim

    To create an accessible and therapeutic garden to promote the wellbeing of all of those who use it, especially those who are living with dementia.

    Four care centres will be selected for Stage 1 (design). Following this first stage, one of the four centres will be given the opportunity to progress to Stage 2 where they will have the garden built at cost

    Project description

    Stage 1 – Consultation and Design (Cost €800) This involves a 1-day site visit by the project team which will result in a preliminary garden design and an outline construction budget.

    The site visit day includes:

    • a workshop with a sub-group of staff
    • informal consultation with residents and relatives
    • a site assessment and evaluation of existing usage

    Following the site visit, the care centre will be provided with a preliminary garden design and an outline construction budget that supports the identified needs of the centre.

    Four care centres will be selected for Stage 1 (design). Following this first stage, one of the four centres will be given the opportunity to progress to Stage 2 where they will have the garden built at cost

    Stage 2 – Garden Contruction and Planting (garden will be built and planted at cost)

    Stage 3 – Post-Construction Evaluation (following the completion of the project the research team will evaluate impact of the redesigned garden)
